“This is gizma meat?” It had a tender texture and was slightly sweet. The smell of galik it had been fried with beckoned my appetite. It was moderately salted, which really brought out the flavor, and the thin bread went well with it. It tasted like garlic shrimp. I guessed they’d call it galik gizma here, though.

I sunk my teeth into the sauteed oneel—the purple onion-like vegetables—and galik gizma sandwich. It was delicious.

“What do you think? Pretty good, right?” Sylphy asked.

“Yeah, this is great. Kinda wish I didn’t know where the meat came from, though.”

Now that I had been released from my milling duties, I was having a late lunch with Sylphy, Cuvi, and Ira.

Danan had already eaten and had gone out on patrol. Melty had decided to skip lunch, saying she needed to come up with a plan for how to distribute all of the extra grainmeal they now had. Don’t come crying to me if you work yourself to starvation.

“What? You don’t like gizmas? Not that there’s anything to like about ’em.” Cuvi had finished eating a while ago; he only stuck around because he wanted to chat with us. I liked his friendly demeanor.

“Where I come from, we don’t really eat bugs,” I said. “Never mind that we don’t have giant bugs like gizmas either. I mean, we don’t have monsters, period.”

“No monsters?” Ira balked. “Impossible. So long as magic exists in the world, there are monsters.”

“We don’t actually have magic there either.”

“That’s hard to believe. Creatures with no magic whatsoever simply do not exist.”

“I’m sitting here with you.”

“Then your very existence flies in the face of reason.”

“Ouch.”

Ira stared at me reproachfully as she munched on her sandwich with her tiny mouth. She seemed so shy at first, yet now I didn’t sense any reservations from her. Why the heck had she acted so demure at first, then? I figured I should ask so I could put my curiosity to rest.

“I don’t mean this in a weird way or anything, but why did you warm up to me so suddenly? At first you wouldn’t even look me in the eye,” I said to Ira.

Her expression froze, and she pulled her hat down over her face. Whoops, the shy version of her was back. Maybe I shouldn’t have asked after all.

“Humans hate one-eyed folk like me. We’re ugly.”

“Is that so? Well, it doesn’t bother me or anything. I never thought you were ugly.”

Ira peered up at me, as if she was trying to parse what I really meant. I looked straight back at her. She was right that she looked quite different from humans, but in Japan, she’d be considered a monster girl and probably turned into a cute mascot character of some sort. I actually liked those kinds of characters quite a lot, so her appearance didn’t bother me in the least.

“If you say so.” Ira stopped acting shy again, and I was glad for it.

“Aren’t you two getting chummy,” Sylphy commented.
